Koreen's Story

Koreen

June 8 1983 I gave birth to my second son. I have I.T.P. [a platlet disorder, I always have a low platlet count] which meant I had to have blood transfusions and platlets. Six weeks later I got really sick [thought I had got food poisining],but when I went to the hospital the dr. did some tests and came back and told me I had hepititis non A non B. In a week I was feeling fine, and they let me go home, telling me everything was fine now.

In mar1995 I got a letter from our government saying I should be tested for hepC as they had records showing I had recieved blood products in 1983 and that at that time there was a lot of tainted blood. So my dr sent me to be tested for HIV and HCV.

Six weeks later I went back to the dr. and he told me I had tested positive for HCV. So I asked him what should I be watching for,his reply was, if you start turning yellow come back and see me. I left his office and started looking for another dr. I found one the second day.He sent me to the internal medicine dr. I was seeing for the platlet disorder. He said there was no need to do a biopsy as my enzyme levals were not overly high.

In 1999 I moved to Vernon B.C. Canada, and started seeing the hepC dr.there. After my first round of blood tests, he said he wanted to do a biopsy and also wanted to check for hemochromatosis as my iron count was at 299. I had the biopsy done the following week, then 3 weeks later I went back to be told that I didn't have hemochromatosis, but The biopsy showed grade 4 stage 4 cirrhosis.

He said he wanted to try me on Rebetron. They finally got me started on it on July 1 2000. within 2 weeks they cut the dose in half as my platlet count dropped to rock bottom. I was on it for4 mths. In Nov. he told me I would have to stop taking it.He told me he was not surprized that it didn't help as he didn't think it would when he started me on it.

In Jan2001 I went to Vancouver to see the transplant Team to be accessed for a transplant, and I have been back every six months since except for this last time, it was only 3 mths. The Surgeon told me I was very close to having the transplant and that they would call me in a week after they got the results from the cat scan.

Jan 2 2004 i got the call, but to be told that they are setting up an appointment for me to have a doppler ultra sound as they found what looks like a tumor 3 inches in diameter. plus they are also making an appointment with the cancer clinic for me.

So now it is another wait to see what is there and what they can do with it. I keep telling myself that without that blood I probably would have died, and it did give me another 20 years. But there are times when I cannot convince myself that 20 years is enough. I want to be around to see all three of my boys have children, and to beable to hold them and watch them grow. I will fight to the end.
